Vietnam has started preparing for 6G while continuing to expand its 5G network. The country is taking an early technical approach by working on 6G research, spectrum planning, international standards and the capability to develop network technologies locally. The Ministry of Science and Technology has established a steering committee for 6G research and development. One of the main objectives is to participate in 6G development during the early stages of international standardisation rather than waiting until specifications are completed.
This approach is different from simply preparing to deploy another mobile network generation. Vietnam wants its engineers and research teams to understand the radio, network and spectrum requirements while 6G specifications are still being developed.
6G Is Moving Towards Technical Definition
6G is being developed internationally under the IMT-2030 framework.
The International Telecommunication Union has already defined six main usage scenarios for IMT-2030: immersive communication, hyper-reliable and low-latency communication, massive communication, ubiquitous connectivity, AI and communication, and integrated sensing and communication.
Technical performance requirements are also progressing. These requirements will provide a common method for evaluating future 6G radio interface technologies.
For Vietnam, participating during this stage provides an opportunity to understand the technical requirements before commercial 6G equipment becomes widely available.
Spectrum Will Be a Major Part of Vietnam’s 6G Work
Radio spectrum is one of the main technical areas Vietnam is preparing for.
6G will need a mix of frequency ranges. Lower frequencies can provide wider coverage, while mid-band and higher-frequency spectrum can support greater capacity and wider channel bandwidth.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology has already highlighted the need to plan spectrum early for technologies such as 6G. This work includes studying frequency availability, interference, spectrum sharing and how new frequency ranges can operate alongside existing mobile services.
The country is also continuing to reorganise spectrum used by current mobile networks. From September 2026, updated planning for the 900 MHz range will support IMT systems including current and later mobile technology generations.
These spectrum decisions are relevant because 6G will not operate as an isolated network. Existing 4G and 5G infrastructure will continue to operate during the transition.
5G Provides the Technical Base
Vietnam’s current 5G deployment gives engineers practical experience that can support later 6G development.
Many technologies being developed for 6G build on work already happening in advanced 5G networks. These include massive MIMO, beamforming, advanced antenna systems, network automation, cloud-based network functions and AI-assisted network management.
6G research is expected to extend these areas further.
Integrated sensing and communication is one example. A future radio network may support communication while also using radio signals to detect position, movement or objects.
AI is another major technical area. AI could become part of radio optimisation, resource allocation, mobility management, interference control and network operation rather than operating only as an external network management function.
Vietnam Wants to Participate in 6G Standards Early
International standardisation will decide how 6G networks, devices and radio interfaces operate together.
Vietnam has stated that it wants to participate actively in global 6G standardisation. This is technically significant because standards define areas such as radio interfaces, network architecture, spectrum use, performance requirements and interoperability.
Early participation also allows Vietnamese research teams to test technical ideas against international requirements.
The ITU completed work on IMT-2030 technical performance requirements in February 2026 and evaluation guidelines in June 2026. These documents form part of the process that will eventually be used to assess candidate 6G radio technologies.
Preparing for 6G Trials
Vietnam’s national digital infrastructure direction includes research, trial licensing and eventual commercial deployment of 6G.
Large-scale 6G deployment is not the immediate step. Technical standards, suitable spectrum, chipsets, radio equipment and test devices must first reach the required level of maturity.
Once equipment becomes available, field trials will become especially important.
6G testing will need to measure much more than peak download speed. Engineers will need to study coverage, signal quality, latency, reliability, mobility, spectrum efficiency, interference, antenna behaviour and application performance under real network conditions.
Vietnam’s current work therefore represents an early engineering phase: build knowledge, prepare spectrum, participate in standards, develop technical capability and be ready to test 6G when the technology reaches the field-trial stage.
